How Drake’s “One Dance” connected Toronto, Lagos and UK funky

Apple Music’s U.S. catalog dates the single to April 4, 2016, while Drake’s public rollout followed on April 5. Featuring Wizkid and a sampled Kyla vocal, the track became Drake’s first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 as a lead artist and Spotify’s first song to reach one billion streams.

The recording

“One Dance” was issued as a Drake single featuring Nigerian artist Wizkid and British singer Kyla before appearing on Drake’s album Views. Apple Music lists the single’s release date as April 4, 2016; contemporary coverage and Drake’s promotional post document its public arrival on April 5.

The UK funky source

The sampled recording was the Crazy Cousinz remix of “Do You Mind,” not a newly recorded Kyla performance. Paleface, the production name used by Errol Reid, originally released “Do You Mind” featuring Kyla as a bassline track; Crazy Cousinz—Errol Reid and Luke “Fluke” Reid—then remixed it in the UK funky style. For “One Dance,” portions of Kyla’s existing vocal were sampled and slowed. Kyla said she did not re-record her part.

Wizkid’s role

Wizkid’s contribution extended beyond his featured vocal: the Views booklet credits Nineteen85 as producer and Noah “40” Shebib and Wizkid as co-producers. The collaboration followed Drake and Skepta’s appearance on a 2015 remix of Wizkid’s “Ojuelegba,” establishing a direct musical connection between Drake and Wizkid before “One Dance.”

Chart and streaming impact

“One Dance” became Drake’s first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 as a lead artist and spent 10 weeks at the summit. In the United Kingdom it held No. 1 for 15 weeks. Spotify records that on December 16, 2016, it became the first song to reach one billion streams on the service; Spotify also identified it as its most-streamed song of 2016.
