“You can’t start a fire without a spark.” Released on this day in 1984, “that one song that was going to throw gasoline on the fire,” as Bruce wrote, was “Dancing in the Dark.” The first of seven top 10 singles from “Born in the U.S.A.,” it was one of the last Bruce wrote and added to the LP — but still one of his “most well-crafted and heartfelt pop songs,” he recalled. Listeners responded, taking it to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Oh our Minneapolis, I hear your voice Singing through the bloody mist We’ll take our stand for this land And the stranger in our midst Here in our home they killed and roamed In the winter of ’26 We’ll remember the names of those who died On the streets of Minneapolis Directed by @tzimnyc Edited by Thom Zimny and Samuel Shapiro Production Footage: @pamspringsteen and Thom Zimny

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good. Stay free, Bruce Springsteen

"My Hometown" gave the "Born in the U.S.A." album its sense of place, a finale that pulled the frame in close — revealing a childhood memory, social and economic hardship, and the pull between staying and going. From the '84/'85 tour to last year's Land of Hope & Dreams tour, the song became one Bruce would return to again and again. As the last of seven top 10 singles from the LP, it peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard chart 40 years ago today.

It’s fleeting.” In this episode, we talk about the importance of building a lifelong perspective on parenting, what to do when communication breaks down, and the importance of being present for your kids.
